Mind Over Matter: How Feelings Govern Our Bodily Processes And Fertility (PART 2)

January 21st, 2010 in Articles // Fertility No Comments

“There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
Albert Einstein 1879-1955

The mind has amazing power over the body. Our thoughts, feelings and emotions can literally govern our physiology, whether we are aware of it or not.

Once we understand this principle it becomes easier to understand our mind’s relationship to our body and how one can dramatically influence the other. The mind controls the body via the quality of our thoughts and the meanings we attribute to them. Our beliefs influence our attitudes and mindset, which changes the feelings that contribute to the behaviour, which affects our overall results—creating a (positive or negative) self-perpetuating cycle. We choose. The mind affects the body just as much as the body impacts it.

The body contains specific emotional receptors called neurotransmitters and neuropeptides. These are the biochemical messengers present in many different tissues and responsible for transmitting and translating information from the mind to the body and back.

Recent research shows that almost all communication between different parts of the body occurs by means of a ‘psychosomatic network’, in other words—mind over matter1. We have these emotional receptors everywhere, including in the gastrointestinal tract, white blood cells, kidneys, pancreas, ovaries, testes, and so on.

What this means is that we feel emotions with our whole body. Most importantly, it is thought that the body’s systems (i.e. autonomic, endocrine, immune and neuropeptide systems) affected by those emotions are communication channels whereby the mind may actually activate genes and the internal cellular machinery of the body.

What Does This Mean To Me And My Fertility?

It’s very simple.

By changing your thoughts you can change your beliefs, which can change your behaviour that in turn can change your results in every area of your life1,2.

Is there anything more empowering?

Sure, it doesn’t mean in clear terms you can think a baby into your life and voila, it appears… However you have the power to influence your thoughts in such a way that they can influence the behaviour of your neurotransmitters, neuropetides, hormones and immune system in such a way to make the physiological processes required for you to have a baby happen with ease.

How Do I Apply Mind Over Matter?

There are 3 major ways and you have heard about them before.

1. Visualisations

Mental rehearsal or mental imagery as it is also known is an old practice that can yield incredible results.

Research in the field of sports psychology has proven its benefits over and over again. The brain does not know the difference between a vividly imagine situation and something that is actually happening or that has happened1,3.

So this means that when you close your eyes and you visualize your hormonal levels in order, your uterus as a cozy, healthy, inviting environment for a baby to develop; your immune system working to protect your pregnancy and any other feats of physiological harmony in time, in response to positive new neuro-pathways you have created through practice your body has no choice but to respond—because your brain believes it to be true. Powerful. Close your eyes and start ‘seeing’ the change you’d like to experience in your health and fertility as if it is already true right now.

2. Affirmations

Affirmations are another way of creating the positive feelings that will help your brain experience the changes you really want in your physiology, fertility and your life. At the very least it will help keep you positive and happy.

Create an affirmation that rings true to you and repeat several times during the day. Be sure to create something that first states your positive frame of mind, always in the present these. Here are some suggestions for you:

  • I am ecstatically expressing my love for my unborn child.

  • I am happily preparing my body/egg/sperm to create the healthy baby of my dreams.

  • I am securely confident that my relationship with my partner will only get stronger as we raise our child.

  • I am sincerely devoting my efforts to raise my child in a loving and nurturing environment.

  • I am vivaciously eating all the best foods possible to promote my child’s long-term health.

3. Prayer
A study of 999 patients admitted to a cardiac unit concluded ‘prayer may be an effective adjunct to standard medical care’4. Another piece of research found that the association between ‘religion’ and well-being has a significant effect on life satisfaction and health5.

Across the scientific literature, the results are very promising, I’d even say at this stage conclusive enough to warrant implementation of prayer as part of overall therapy6.

Irrespective of your religious denomination and even belief in God, most of us believe in something greater than ourselves. Scientific evidence is catching up with the effects of belief, its influence on the body and the consequences to our health. Be an early innovator, open your heart and “Ask, so you can receive”—at the very least some consolation and renewed hope on your fertility journey.
