According to Australian research each year we waste approximately eight billion dollars worth of edible food due to poor food planning & lack of effective shopping.
We don’t take the time to prepare an appropriate shopping list, and worst of all we don’t even check the cupboard or fridge before going to the store. Despite the statistic that 1 in 6 couples in Australia experience fertility problems and many never achieve their greatest dream of creating a family—diet and lifestyle are two of the single biggest factors couples wanting a healthy baby can impact when having difficulty conceiving.
Lack of food planning means up to 40% of the average household bin is food!
We have also unfortunately become a very wasteful society and because of the lack of time and care we take in meal planning, according to Australian food wastage statistics we are also having a negative impact on the environment.
It is estimated that in Australia 20% or one in five of the bags of food groceries we buy is discarded, meaning that at the end of the day all the resources used to get the food from the paddock to the plate are also wasted. When we throw out food we are also throwing with it the water, the fuel and other resources used to produce it all as well as a whopping $1036 per household each year. This is enough money to feed the average household for over one month or paying about six months’ worth of electricity bills!
The environmental toxic load increased by food production and subsequent wastage is substantial due to the additional pesticides, fertilisers as well as all the extra methane gas produced when food rots in landfill. This methane estimated to be 25 times more potent than the carbon pollution that comes out of a car’s exhaust.”
Even Mother Nature can use a helping hand from good lifestyle habits and reduced environmental toxins when trying to have a baby and things are not quite going to plan.
Poor food planning and preparation means some of our daily choices fail us
Couples who heavily rely on a ‘traditional’ Western diet (with high intakes of red and processed meat, dairy, refined grains, pizza, snacks, high energy drinks, mayonnaise, biscuits, cakes and other sweets are more likely to experience fertility problems according to international research.
A big part of the reason we end up wasting so much food is generally due to eating take away at the last minute instead of the cooking the food we have in the house. This type of behavior is dangerous for two reasons: Firstly food ends up being wasted but also harmful, damaged fats and sugars end up being consumed in place of healthy, fertility enhancing foods.
High sugar intake and trans fats consumption negatively impact a woman’s egg quality and ability to ovulate. Whilst for men, sperm quality and thus the ability to affect a healthy pregnancy are highly compromised.
The solution is healthy food planning
To combat the dangers of poor food planning you need to plan and organise your meals in advance. Despite being time consuming it is a relatively easy thing to do. To be effective you must also create appropriate shopping lists and stick to them at the checkout—buying only what you really need.
