Stress Less! Act Pregnant Now, Get Pregnant Later

Stress directly impacts the hormones and reproductive organs in both men and women. It increases the production of a chemical called cortisol, which in turn negatively affects sex hormones and the reproductive activity within the body. High levels of cortisol have been associated with infertility problems and weight gain.

Stress in men can create a condition called oxidative stress which results in low sperm count, weakened sperm motility, fragmented DNA within the sperm cells, and abnormal sperm. It can also cause impotence and ejaculation problems.

Women and stress can result in a cessation of both ovulation and menstruation . It can negatively impact the chemical and physical processes of egg maturation and release. Even if an egg is successfully fertilized, stress can cause chemical changes and spasms in the fallopian tubes and uterus to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting. It can also cause miscarriage after successful implantation.

Unfortunately, couples faced with fertility issues often find themselves in an ugly cycle of stress on top of stress! Stress may be causing their infertility, which in turn causes disappointment and more stress, which keeps fertility further hindered. So what to do? How can you break the cycle of psychological stress?

Most of western medicine only treats the body while ignoring the influence your mind and emotions have on your body. You are a whole person with a body, mind, and emotions. True healing can only take place when you are treated as a whole. Scientific research studies confirm this.

  • A study in the Journal of IVF Embryo Transfer showed extreme stress can interfere and stop ovulation and also affected the hormones essential to falling pregnant.
  • Researchers  published  in Fertility  and  Sterility  suggest  that  stress leads to infertility because it triggers the production of malformed sperm.
  • A University of California study of 157 men concluded stress can temporarily reduce a man’s sperm count.
  • Scientific research presented to the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology indicates that certain types of “talk therapy” can reduce stress and increase chances of conception.
  • Research at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia (USA) found that women who had ceased to ovulate regained fertility after cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Other research indicates that laughter can reduce stress and increase ones odds of conception
  • A study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine showed a direct negative link between high stress occupations and increased risk of miscarriage.

stress can damage your fertility

One of the keys to the Natural Fertility Breakthrough Program – is the role of the mind in fertility which can be applied directly to stress management.

Step one is to identify sources of undue pressure; write it down, make a list if you must. Once you know the sources you’ll have a better idea about how to approach them.

  • Emotional Freedom Technique | An amazing relaxation tool with benefits — it can be used to ‘turn off’ (like a switch) practically any negative emotional that is currently afflicting you.
  • Time Management | Schedule your daily activities in a way that you have time to really unwind.
  • Music | While cleaning house or cooking or just doing nothing, put on some music that heightens your mood, relaxes or soothes you (and your partner)
  • Massage | This is something you and your partner can do for each other. You don’t have to be a professional masseuse; just the touch of the hands is soothing, reassuring and a sensuous prelude to lovemaking. However, a trip to a day spa for professional deep tissue massage is well worth it, and some spas offer couples’ packages.
  • Yoga | Very effective for relieving stress! If you don’t belong to a fitness club, you can rent or buy instructional DVDs.
  • Meditation | Carve out a quiet space in your day to silence mind chatter and do some deep breathing.
  • Talk It Out | If you don’t have a trusted friend on board whom you can vent to, it may be worth it to see a counselor. It will allow you to let it all out and perhaps give you a fresh perspective.
  • Tea Time | Eliminate caffeine. Treat yourself to a relaxing herbal tea such as chamomile, hibiscus, lemongrass or linden.
  • Think Positive | If you keep telling yourself “I’ll never get pregnant” then you won’t! Replace that negative voice in your head with positive imagery. Visualisation has been shown to have deeply effective, physical benefits for fertility.
  • Romantic Getaways | A little romantic getaway with your partner can have such a refreshing, reinvigorating and rejuvenating effect on you, your partner and the relationship. It doesn’t have to cost a lot, it can even be in your own city but it can be really fun. Don’t stress, enjoy each other!
  • Acupuncture | Acupuncture can help to relieve stress check out the options or book today for an initial consultation

Your mind may be more powerful than you think. One of my favourite pieces of advice when asked how do you get pregnant is really simple: “Act pregnant now to get pregnant later”.

Stress Less to get PregnantYour actions speak so loudly when it comes to optimising your fertility. If you want to know how to get pregnant fast, know this first – only you can change your results. You must take personal responsibility for your actions and do all you can if you want to get pregnant faster; you must at the same time be able to let go of the need for a particular outcome.

There are many ways of helping yourself find your peace you can begin simply by focusing on opportunities to learn how to get pregnant as opposed to questioning “why can’t I get pregnant?” My experience with patients over the last decade proves that letting go of the need for a certain outcome and making peace with your current situation is the best way to harness rather than waste your energies and inner power, during what sometimes feels like a never ending, trying to conceive (TTC) journey.

The point is that if you are able to let go or at least ease the emotions around the question “What if I am never able to have a baby?” and replace that stress factor with “What else could be possible in my life if I never did have a baby?” and then from that place continued to give yourself the best possible chances of realising your dream? Would it not, at the very least make the journey less arduous?

Acting in this way you would eventually either become a parent or you would be able to reach a balanced point where you would know you had done everything possible; everything you could to create the healthy baby of your dreams—without ever having any regrets or doubts in the back of your mind about “What if I had tried….” or “Did I approach things in the right way?”.

Unfortunately not every couple will be blessed with a child of their own

The reality is some women will never conceive. Sadly, not every desiring and deserving couple will have a baby—for many reasons; some which are identifiable and others which we may never know. The point to it all is to do the best you can and give yourself the best possible chances, leaving no stone unturned—to have NO regrets. This is the type of peace of mind we afford our patients irrespective of their ultimate baby “status”. By doing the very best you can right now you will know, your current fertility status is “not your fault” and you are not alone. And of course the best case scenario is that soon you will get pregnant and get to hold the healthy baby of your dreams.
